Biographical Information
John Paul Marosy
John Paul Marosy is a pioneer in the field of aging. His latest book, Elder Care: A Six Step Guide to Balancing Work and Family has won both a national 2003 Mature Media Award and a 2003 Caregiver Friendly Award from Today's Caregiver magazine. He is also the author of A Manager's Guide to Elder Care and Work (Greenwood Publishing, Westport, CT, 1999), the standard reference text on this subject. He is the author of numerous articles on the subject and is a sought-after speaker.
As president of Bringing Elder Care Home LLC, John Paul consults with business and community organizations to create work places that allow employed caregivers to balance elder care and work.
Over the past 25 years, John Paul has served as CEO of leading healthcare organizations, including Minuteman Senior Services (Burlington, MA), the Home Health Assembly of New Jersey (Princeton, NJ) and Visiting Nurse Affiliates (Cambridge, MA).
And he has lived the elder care experience as a family caregiver to his father.
John Paul serves as national program director of the Communicating Effectively with Healthcare Professionals Program of the National Family Caregivers Association, a Program of National Significance funded by the U.S. Administration on Aging.
He is a founder of the Family Caregiving Coalition of New England and serves as central New England Representative for the NFCA Caregiver Community Action Network.
The Planning Partnership In Aging, a program conceived and implemented by John Paul, received a Presidential Citation from the President's Council on Public/Private Initiatives.
John Paul holds a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs from Boston
University and a bachelors in Urban Studies from Saint Peter's College
in Jersey City, NJ. He is the immediate past president of the Massachusetts
Gerontology Association and is an active member of the American
Society on Aging, the Alliance for Work/Life Progress, the New England
Employee Benefits Council, and the National Speakers Association.
He resides in Worcester, Massachusetts with wife Donna and son Martin.

An awesome wave of aging is bearing down on America, washing over
every aspect of our lives, reaching into our homes and jobs. The
aging of America is driving a tremendous growth in family caregiving,
where working-aged persons struggle to balance their job responsibilities
with the responsibility of caring for an older relative. In fact,
family caregivers provide over 80% of all the home care in the United
States. Juggling responsibilities for raising a family, performing
on the job, and caring for an older relative can be stressful. It
can also be a richly rewarding experience; an opportunity to heal
relationships and give back to an older loved one. John Paul Marosy
has helped countless organizations and individuals to understand
and safely deal with the profoundly important issue of elder care.

Caregiving affects people of all ages, races, ethnicities, lifestyles
and income levels. Usually untrained for the tasks at hand, and
working without respite, family caregivers commonly sacrifice their
own physical and mental health—and frequently their financial well-being—for
the ones they love.
While motivated by emotional commitment, they provide an invisible
workforce that literally props up the American health care system.
The value of these family caregivers’ services is estimated at $257
billion a year—more than twice what is spent, nationwide, on nursing
homes and paid home care combined. Today, caregiving is much more
than a family issue. It is a social and economic issue that warrants
attention and action from policymakers, the health care industry

Family caregivers made history on September 20, 2003.
On that sunny Saturday morning, 175 family caregivers and professionals
who work with them gathered at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston
to voice their concerns and to articulate their dreams for a better
quality of life for all family caregivers. They were joined by expert
panelists at the Boston site – and by another 200+ New England residents
who participated in a live, interactive webcast of the event. Some
gathered at satellite sites in Massachusetts and New Hampshire,
while others logged on via their personal computers in their homes.
Background
The New England Family Caregiving Town Hall Meeting came about
thanks to the united effort of over 40 community organizations throughout
New England. A full list of community sponsors can be found later
in this report. The New England meeting was one of several town
hall meetings organized by the National Family Caregivers Association
(NFCA) as part of a year-long celebration of its tenth anniversary.
